This week, in America:
Our president is threatening nuclear war against North Korea.
Our president is threatening to invade Venezuela .
Our president refuses to denounce white supremacists who killed one woman and injured scores of others in a violent rampage.
Police continue to beat the living shit out of black people for petty (or fictional) reasons while standing by and watching white supremacists attack counter-protesters because they were afraid it was “unsafe.”
Centrist Democrat pundits use the horror of Charlottesville’s violence and display of virulent racism and fascism to try to salvage the reputation of Hillary Clinton .
My soul cries out for mercy and an end to this madness.
People, if we don’t stop handwringing and saying “not my President” and going on with our lives as if someone else is going to change this horrific trajectory that we’re on, we are going to see a lot of death in the very near future. Here in our country, in North Korea, in the Middle East, in Venezuela, fucking anywhere this monster of a president feels like fucking with day-to-day.
Just two days ago, former Republican senator Gordon Humphrey, who quit the party when Trump was elected, wrote an open letter imploring the his state’s congressional delegation to support a commission to determine whether the president is mentally fit. He wrote:
“Donald Trump is impaired by a seriously sick psyche. His sick mind and reckless conduct could consume the lives of millions. The threat of nuclear war is steeply on the rise.
You must not take comfort in the system of checks and balances. The president alone has the authority to launch nuclear weapons, the only restraint being the advice of senior advisers who might be present at the time of crisis, and Donald Trump has shown repeated contempt for informed and wise counsel. He is sick of mind, impetuous, arrogant, belligerent and dangerous.
Donald Trump should be relieved of the powers of the presidency at the earliest date. …
Serious crises are bearing down on us.
We cannot leave our national security and our families’ safety in the hands of a president whose poor judgment, belligerence, vindictiveness and reckless impetuosity constitute an indictment of his mental health.
Donald Trump is seriously sick. He is dangerous. As a citizen, a former U.S. senator and 12-year member of the Armed Services Committee, I urge you to act once. This is an emergency.”
Later, on MSNBC, he told commentator Lawrence O’Donnell, “They’re saying behind the scenes, ‘He’s crazy…he’s delusion, he’s paranoid, he’s not a well man. He’s dangerous.” This from a Republican reflects just how serious this situation has become.
And yet, aside from some chiding from prominent Republicans who voiced harsher rebukes of the white supremacists in Charlottesville, we can expect little to no genuine action to curb this unstable and deranged man from setting off a nuclear war against tiny North Korea, a country which nonetheless has nuclear bombs of its own. And which has China standing right behind it should Trump make the horrifically egregious error of ordering any nuclear strikes.
I don’t know about you, but anyone with a calm pulse and apathetic demeanor right now is no less insane than Trump or is irresponsible beyond all reason. The U.S. is careening from one anxiety-inducing political crisis to another and if you think it’s all going to turn out fine if you go about your life as usual, go to work, have lunch with co-workers, talk about sports and what your binging on Netflix, take your Ambien and start again, well, you are fucking mistaken.
WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!
We haven’t seen a foreign policy situation this fraught since perhaps the Cuban Missile Crisis.
We haven’t seen racist rallies as large as the one in Charlottesville in 20 years.
The LIBOR crisis is just heating up but could lead to what Rolling Stone ’s Matt Taibbi writes could be “the world’s largest and most lucrative class-action lawsuit: Earth vs. Banks .” “A 28 Days Later style panic is not out of the question,” he notes.
Add to that the stubborn and self-destructive refusal by Democratic party leaders to abandon corporate-friendly policies in lieu of progressive, citizen-friendly policies has led them to an all out daily flame war with a large proportion of what was once their political base. Actual resistance to Trump’s sociopathic leadership is embarrassingly tepid.
America’s shit is not merely in disarray. I can no longer be clever about this, no longer make even the mellowest jokes about it.
Our country is breaking apart before our eyes and we’re just staring, waiting for some kind of automatic recalibration to kick in.
Motherfuckers, there is no automatic recalibration!!!! We are the only checks left in this bullshit. If you don’t get political now, and stay that way until this shit is addressed with genuine counter-action, you’ll be in a permanent state of high anxiety and terror for the rest of your days. And so will your children, and their children.
Nuclear war, daily domestic terrorism, endless foreign wars being fought by the poorest, most disadvantaged of our citizens (or privatized and fought by corporate mercenaries), an economy so rotten that your savings will never be safe unless you’re a fucking millionaire, and a government that blames you for all your misfortune if you are not a fucking millionaire and provides no effective safety net for when you get sick, lose a job, suffer a family emergency, are robbed blind by a bank…well, the list of hells goes on.
This is what we are flirting with if we stay apolitical, apathetic, or merely distracted by shows and games.
The American Dream is now a fucking nightmare.
