The "Black Lives Matter" T-shirt Challenge

on

Every time I wear my “Black Lives Matter” t-shirt out in public — and I live in a VERY white town, sadly — I am always ten times more aware of how people look at me or behave as they read it.

Keep in mind that I’m a 53-year-old white man.

But when I wear the shirt I know it causes both anger and confusion in some people, and you have to think, “Somebody might yell at me, insult me, or far worse.”

I suspect this is a tiny fraction of what it’s like to be black in America.

Of course, I can take the shirt off or choose not to wear it and become invisible to racists again.

If you are white, get a BLM t-shirt and wear it in public. I guarantee you will become VERY aware of your surroundings. Plus, you’ll perform one small act of solidarity with black Americans who sorely need that and a whole lot more.
